Ruth Hutzel Obituary

Ruth E. (Smith-Shipley) Hutzel, 92, of Meyersdale, went to be with her Lord on February 22, 2023 at UPMC Altoona.

Born June 14, 1930, in Glencoe, the daughter of Harry and Mabel (Dively) Smith. Preceded in death by parents; first husband: Charles F. Shipley Jr.; second husband: Austin C. Hutzel Sr.; siblings: Harry Jr., James, Ethel Donges, Carl, John, Robert and Billy; granddaughter: Bobbi Jo Wedge; and son-in-law: Richard L. Sines.

Survived by her children: John (Nanci) Shipley, Ted (Kathy) Shipley, Bruce (Lorrie) Shipley, Kathy Sines, and Tracy (Robert) Wedge; grandchildren: M. Eric Shipley, Julie (Michael) Sarver, Carrie (Michael) Seslow, Ben Shipley, R. Lee (Amy) Sines, Katie (Todd) Garland, Susan (Jason) Frankhouser, Jennifer (Michael) Carter, William (Mandy) Sines, Emily Shipley, Kayla (Doug) Sines, and Cody (Brandi) Wedge; 25 great grandchildren: 1 great great grandchild; stepchildren: Austin C. Hutzel Jr. and Phyllis Griffith; siblings: Herbert Smith, Hazel “Kate” Tomlinson, Arlene Gallagher, Dorothy Leister, Kenneth (Marian) Smith, Thomas (Sharon) Smith, and Nancy Miller.

Widowed at age 33, Ruth worked tirelessly to provide for her five children. She worked at the Meyersdale High School Cafeteria, where she became the beloved head cook, and was the “Mom” and “Gram” to many students. She was also known as “Aunt Babe” to her many nieces and nephews. Faithful lifelong member of New Hope Church, Meyersdale. Her passion in life was her family. She had a miraculous way to put a meal together in minutes to anyone who walked in the door. She was a devoted mom, grandma and Grammy, who will be missed by many. She loved flowers, watching birds, making afghans, and talking on the phone.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Price Funeral Service, Meyersdale. Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday, at New Hope Church, 3404 Cumberland Hwy., Meyersdale, with Pastor Steve Kontaxes officiating. Interment Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Fairhope. Following interment, a lunch will be served at New Hope Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given in her name to New Hope Church, 3404 Cumberland Hwy., Meyersdale, PA 15552.
