Ruth Elaine (Lohr) Walker, 74, of Meyersdale entered her heavenly home with her Lord and Savior on September 14, 2025 at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, PA. She was preceded in death by her father, Clyde, whom passed away when she was an infant and her mother, Anna, whom she lovingly referred to as "Toot." On July 30, 1971, she married her high school sweetheart, Thomas. They have two children that she was so very proud of: Joseph (Connie) Walker and Kristin (Fred) Walters. She has five grandchildren who were her absolute world and motivation each and every day: Kyle (Megan) Walker, Alana (Lane) Buterbaugh, Gina (Kyle) Pritts, Marisa and Morgan Walters. Additionally, she is survived by two very special aunts, Edna Bowman and Nellie Weller.
She graduated as valedictorian from Meyersdale Area High School in 1968. She continued her education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Later, she furthered her education by earning a master's degree in Elementary Education at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. She returned to her alma mater, Meyersdale, where she devoted 36 years to teaching and molding thousands of students, many of which she still fondly talked about. Just before retirement, she, along with her daughter and daughter-in-law, purchased and operated a beauty salon, Image Makers, in Somerset. After her retirement from teaching, she worked for several years as a staff reporter for the New Republic Newspaper in Meyersdale, where she enjoyed discovering and sharing the stories of others.
Ruth found various ways to serve her community while still working and even in her retirement. She was a member of Amity United Church of Christ in Meyersdale. She taught Sunday School every week for many years, as well as led Meyersdale's community vacation Bible school each summer. In connection with her love of reading and learning, Ruth was a member of the Friends of the Public Library in Meyersdale. She helped to organize fundraisers to support the local library, as she believed it was a valued asset to the community.
Ruth's greatest joy came from admiring the beauty of the family's dairy farm, Cloverdale. She enjoyed sitting on the porch, soaking up the warm sun, listening to the birds and watching the cows graze in the pasture. Her heart was content to see her family working together to care for the property and animals. She was an avid reader and a true lifelong learner. Her other hobbies included crafting, crocheting and growing flowers.
Ruth was blessed with the gift of organ donation in 2005. She lived a simple life of gratitude to honor the donor and her family. In her last act of selflessness, she too was an organ donor. She knew how profoundly organ donation can impact a family and change the trajectory of their lives forever. For more information on becoming an organ donor, you can visit www.core.org.
