Robert Michael Philson

Robert M. (Bob) Philson. 83, died 6-16-2021 at the Goodwill Retirement Home in Grantsville, Md.

He was born in Beacon, NY, the son of Samuel R. Philson and Althea Habel, husband of Kay Stroup, brother of Nancy (Don) Kopf and Rebecca (Richard) Diak, uncle to three, great uncle to eight. He leaves many cousins, McClure, Shaver, Habel and Mankamyer.

Bob graduated from Meyersdale High School in 1955, went on to Gettysburg College following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He was in ROTC and Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Then on to the University of Pennsylvania for his Juris Doctor Degree. Bob spent five years then in Del Rio,Tx with the Air Force. Once back home he joined the law firm of his mentor Frank Lucente in Somerset. He was elected to the office of District Magistrate and served for 30 or so years. At the same time he followed 5 generations of Philsons and was a director of Citizen's National Bank, retiring after 50 years. He was also a 50 year member of the Somerset County Bar Association and on the Library Board in Meyersdale. Rotary chose him as Citizen of the Year. He enjoyed identifying the birds who dined in his back yard and watching Baseball and other sports on tv once his crosswords were finished. As a teenager he enjoyed playing tennis at the courts of Daniel Clapper. Bob will be remembered for his quiet unassuming manner.
He and his family want to thank Goodwill staff for their loving care along with friends Rose and Roger Hutzell, Tim Walters, Sam and Kathy Mc Clure, Bill and Sandy Cline and his neighbors, especially Bill and Janie Boger and others for their unending assistance and care.

No services will be held pursuant to his instructions.
