Mary Lenore (Cross) Reeder

Mary Lenore Cross Reeder (Len), 95, passed away on August 18, 2020 at Rest Assured Living Center near Meyersdale, PA. Born on May 15, 1925 on the Cross family farm in Sand Patch near Meyersdale. The Cross family immigrated from Scotland in 1888. Mary (Len) was the daughter of John and Mary Cross and one of five children (Katherine, Jessie, Ada Jean, John). Following graduation from Meyersdale High School in 1943, she attended Casselman’s Secretarial School in Cumberland, Maryland and worked for Potomac Edison for 10 years. During that time, she took flying lessons and earned her private license in 1946 on a J3 Piper Cub.



In 1955, she married George Reeder (deceased) and moved to a dairy farm in Franklin County, just outside Mercersburg, PA. They retired from farming in 1979, sold the Franklin County farm, and moved back to her home farm in Somerset. During their retirement, they took many road trips across the United States to see the sights and visit family. Mary was happy to live next door to her sister, Jessie on the Shirley farm. They visited frequently and on one occasion, shared the experience of cutting off the head of a rattlesnake with a shovel and butcher knife before it made it into the house. When asked who actually cut off the head, Mary replied, “Well, I sawed for a while and Jessie sawed for awhile..”! Good old Scottish grit on top of Savage Mountain!!

She is survived by two children: David Reeder, Somerset, PA and Daniel Reeder (Pat) of St. Thomas, PA. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Jessie Shirley, Meyersdale, and sister-in-law, Doris Reeder, Lemasters, PA. She has four grandchildren, Laura Stepanick (Evan) of Falls Church, VA, Rachel Smith (Mike) of Alexandria, VA, James Reeder of Wichita Falls, Texas and Paul Scott Reeder of Clovis, New Mexico.



Len was a member of the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Lemasters, PA. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, August 22 at 1 p.m. at Price Funeral Service, Meyersdale, with a visitation from noon to 1 p.m. A brief graveside service will be held Tuesday, August 25 at 1 p.m. at Spring Grove Cemetery in Lemasters, PA. Due to the age of the family and friends, masks are required.
