Edgar William “Bill” Irwin, 92, of Meyersdale, died March 19, 2020 at In Touch Hospice House, Somerset. Born June 4, 1927 in Somerset, the son of James and Ruth (Herring) Irwin. Preceded in death by parents; wife, Blanche; brothers: James, Jack, Ken; and sister: Thelma.

Survived by his children: Jeff Irwin; and Mardi Vincent and husband John, all of Meyersdale; grandchildren: Mark and Eric; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graduate of Meyersdale High School and served in World War II in the U.S. Navy, on the U.S.S. Shamrock Bay. Bill received his Barber License in 1948, and he was one of the first Barbers who started taking appointments and he was later a director of the Somerset County Weights and Measurements.

Petitioned Meyersdale F& AM Masonic Lodge #554, where he served as Master in 1988, entered the Harrisburg Consistory in October 1958; he worked as a Knight in 32nd degree in the Harrisburg Consistory, and brought more than 60 candidates to the Harrisburg Consistory. He served as secretary of Somerset County Scottish Rite Club and Membership Chairman for 15 years. He was a member of the Meyersdale Volunteer Fire Department, where held every office in the fire company, including 8 years as Chief and received the Fire Department’s President’s Award in 2004. Bill also was instrumental in organizing the Maple Leaf Rod and Gun Club, with 8 members, and also the Meyersdale Ambulance Association, and he is a lifetime member of both. He received the Lions Club Citizen of the year award in 2005 for community service. He was inducted to the Somerset County Oldtimers Baseball Hall of Fame. Bill was proud to be a member of the Charles E. Kelly Post #112 American Legion for 74 consecutive years. He was baptized and a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, Meyersdale. He read his Bible every evening.

Bill enjoyed fishing with his buddies, Ab and George, delivering fruit baskets to ailing fireman, but his greatest joy was helping other people.

Due to the limited number of people allowed, as mandated, funeral services will be private, with Pastor Marc Valentine officiating. Interment Meyersdale Area Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Somerset In Touch Hospice, Meyersdale Masonic Lodge, First United Methodist Church or the Meyersdale American Legion.
