Paul E. Howsare, 82, of Meyersdale, passed away peacefully and went to be with the Lord on February 20, 2017 at Meyersdale Medical Center.

Paul was born April 20, 1934 in Rainsburg, the son of the late Bruce and Elnore (Hite) Howsare. Also preceded in death by his brothers: Bill, John, and George Howsare.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis Ann (Miller) Howsare; children: Denny and wife Judy (Hahn) Howsare and Rodney Howsare, both of Meyersdale; and Christine Crutchley of Jefferson, Maryland; grandchildren: Breiann Yoder and husband Randy, Chalyce Howsare and special friend, Austin Boyer, all of Meyersdale; Paul “Buddy” Howsare and wife Erin, Quecreek; and Connor and Autumn Crutchley, Jefferson, Maryland; two great grandsons: Xander Howsare and Cole Yoder. Also survived by siblings: Kathleen Sigler, Leonard Howsare and Royce Howsare; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Paul was a graduate of Beall High School in Frostburg and a member of the National Guard. He was a car detailer for Gnagey Olds and then spent over 20 years as a professional over the road truck driver. After retirement, he and his wife were the owners of Paul’s Tavern, and he enjoyed driving school bus for the Meyersdale Area Schools.

Earlier in his life, he enjoyed shooting pool and was an avid golfer. His passion was bowling and was one of the premier bowlers in the Tri State Area. He was an exceptional softball pitcher and even pitched semi-pro ball in Detroit. Paul was a member of many local organizations and was well known throughout the area. He was a 30 plus year cancer survivor during which time he gave his life to God and spent a large part of his life witnessing for the Lord. Paul was a member of Summit Mills Grace Brethren Church, and past deacon at Meyersdale Church of the Brethren. He also was a lay minister at the Grantsville Church of the Brethren and taught bible study for over 20 years at The Patriot and Rest Assured Assisted Living Center. He performed several wedding ceremonies including his grandson’s wedding, which was one of his proudest moments.

Paul and Phyllis were members of the Airstream Travel Association and spent many months traveling the countryside with friends. He also enjoyed auctions, yard sales and selling his treasures at the Springs Farmer’s Market. Paul was a beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather who will be sadly missed by his family.

There will be no viewing by request of the family. All are welcome to attend a celebration of his life, which will be held on Friday, February 24, at 1 p.m. at the Summit Mills Grace Brethren Church. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Dolly’s Army, c/o Denny Howsare, 208 Meyers Ave., Meyersdale, PA 15552. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society via the Meyersdale Relay for Life.
