Oscar Steinly Obituary

Steinly

Oscar L. Steinly, 94, of Garrett, passed away on February 13, 2018 at the In Touch Hospice House, Somerset. Oscar was born on the farm of his parents (Charles Steinly and wife, Annie Sass) in Larimer Township on July 21, 1923. He attended Geiger School, near the White Oak Churches. Oscar joined the U.S. Marine Corps in May of 1943 and was honorably discharged in August of 1946. In 1947, he met and married Dorothy Marie Haer. They were married for 62 years. During that time, Oscar worked for the Western Maryland Railroad, New Enterprise Co. (on the Pennsylvania Turnpike), General Motors in Cleveland, Ohio, and finally, for the Meyersdale Area School District as a custodian. Oscar loved his job in the school system, enjoying the interaction with teachers and students alike. Oscar had three sons: Wayne E. Steinly, Rockwood; Larry D. Steinly, Thurmond, MD; and Dwight, Garrett. He also had 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Oscar was a proud member of the United Auto Workers. He was active in the American Legion, the Garrett Chamber of Commerce, and the Garrett Homecoming Committees during the 1960s-70s. He also was a former Garrett Borough Town Council member. Oscar’s passions were his family, his love of the outdoors, his cabin in the Gomer Hollow, and playing cards with his sister, Myra Brown and niece, Lynn Shaffer. Oscar, like his spouse Dorothy, was truly an exceptional parent. He was proud of his sons, and his boys grew up knowing that they could always count on him time and time again when they needed a pat on the back or maybe a kick in the pants. Although Oscar will be sorely missed, his entertaining stories and heartfelt memories will stay with his family and friends forever. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, February 24, at Price Funeral Service, Meyersdale, where a celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m., with Rev. Jeri Penrod officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Somerset County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to In Touch Hospice, PO Box 1173, Somerset, PA 15501.
