Helen Imler Hook passed peacefully on Christmas Day 2016 in Lake Mary, Florida. She was born on Aug. 1, 1916 in Meyersdale, PA and lived to celebrate 100 years.  The second of five children, Helen was born to Lloyd and Margaret (Kemp) Imler. She was preceded in death by her husband: Robert Kincaid Hook, who died in 1967; her four siblings: Mary Imler Swanhart, Richard Imler, Lloyd Imler Jr., and Patricia Imler Lee, and stepdaughter: Sara Hook Stoltze.

As many in Meyersdale can recall, she was a dedicated nurse who tended to the students at Meyersdale Area Schools for 35 years and prior to that worked for Dr. Creed Glass at Hazel McGilvery Hospital. She graduated from nurses training in 1934 from Church Home and Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and later graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

From 1965 until 2010, she lived on Meyers Avenue then moved to Florida to enjoy the sunshine and warmth and be close to her family. Helen was an avid volunteer during the Maple Festival in the doctor’s office, enjoyed decorating the Maple Manor at Christmas, and checked in guests to Yoder’s Motel for nearly 20 years. Helen was also a proud member of the Meyersdale Nurses Association and loved to volunteer with Mary Niemiller at the Western Maryland Railroad Station on Main Street after its refurbishment. Helen is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Hook Kimmel (Donald Kimmel Jr.); granddaughter: Megan D. Kimmel; and great granddaughter: Abigail K. VanRysdam, all of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral mass will be held on Friday, Dec. 30 at 11 a.m., with family visitation prior to the mass at 10 a.m., at Saints Philip and James Catholic Church in Meyersdale, with Rev. Stephen Shin, OFM Cap. Committal SS. Philip & James Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Meyersdale Public Library, 210 Center Street, Meyersdale, PA 15552, where Helen spent much time and had great appreciation for the staff and resources.  Arrangements by Price Funeral Service, Inc., Meyersdale.
